Heroic figure in Oscar-nominated genocide film hopes to be president [Includes Audio]

Rwanda is more than 8,500 miles from San Antonio. It's where Paul Rusesabagina was born. It's also where he, now, wants to be president. He made the announcement in an exclusive interview with KENS 5 before speaking at a luncheon with the San Antonio Bar Association.

"We want to change that country," said Rusesabagina. "To change that country we need new blood."

The 61-year-old, who lives in San Antonio, said he wants to be the leader of his native land. The call to do so he said has been building since he gained global attention after being the heroic figure in the 2004 movie Hotel Rwanda. The feature film was Oscar nominated.

The movie was based on the Rwandan genocide on April 1994. It showed how the assistant manager of Hotel des Mille Collines provided refuge for Rwanda's Hutu and Tutsi populations during a bloody civil war. Rusesabagina gave shelter to 1,268 refugees. The horrific scars of that time still live with the humanitarian.

"It is always fresh in my mind," said the Rwandan presidential hopeful. "It is as if it was happening yesterday."

The question for the son of a Hutu and Tutsi is how far will his name recognition and acclaim take him? Can he catapult himself into the from freedom fighter man in the movies to president?

"I think we should make a difference between the man behind the movie and the movie itself," said Rusesabagina.

His platform is based on peace, development, and justice. Rwandan presidents serve 7 years terms. The last election was in 2010
